“We Have Seen…”
1 John 1:1-2 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—
John’s first encounter with Jesus is recorded in the Gospel of John chapter one. It appears that he was already a disciple of John the Baptist (John 1:35) when Jesus, showed up to be baptized there at the Jordan. The first recorded words that Jesus spoke to John, after he and Andrew asked Him where He was staying was, “Come and see” (John 1:39). John then spent the next three and half years of his life, “seeing” who Jesus really is and he came to some powerful conclusions that he shares with us.
I love reading the similarities between the first verses of the Gospel of John and his Epistle, First John. They both begin with a proclamation of the deity of Jesus Christ!
John 1:1-3 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
In the Gospel of John, he proclaims how the Word was made flesh in the world, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) In the Book of First John, he proclaims how the Word became real in him and the other disciples. “We heard Him with or ears, we saw Him with our eyes, we touched him with our hands”.
The reality of Who Jesus is, became very personal to John and the disciples during those three years of ministry as they watch him calm the waves of a stormy sea, give sight to blind people, raise dead people, heal sick people, feed hungry people miraculously, and give hope and eternal life to demon possessed and lost people.
If you want to experience Jesus in your daily life, you need to know Who He really is too. Jesus invitation is still open to you! “Come and see!” Come to His eternal Word, the Bible, with an open and honest heart and you can also personally experience Him like John did.
God bless!
