“By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.”
Over the many years that I have been a pastor I have been asked the question, “How can I know for sure that I’m really saved.” Many individuals have come to me seeking the assurance of their salvation. They recount how they prayed a prayer when they were a child, they got baptized, they joined the church, they have gone to Sunday school and Bible studies, and everyone thinks they are saved but inside they are struggling with this issue.
In the passage before us John is giving us some very practical advice with this question. How can I really know that I’ve been born again and truly belong to the family of God? Or am I living a lie and really belong to the family of the devil? This is one of the most important questions we need to answer and make sure about.
The first big evidence that John gives so that you can have the assurance that you are in the family of God, is that you are enabled to “practice righteousness.” (1 John 2:29 & 3:10) He makes it clear if you “practice righteousness” you have been born of God. But if you do not “practice righteousness” you are not of God.
In other words, you cannot habitually live in sin and disobedience to the Word of God and His known will for your life. Remember not everyone who says that they are a Christian is truly a Christian. John is trying to help us discern who is real and who is not.
It is my prayer as you read this brief blog and listen to these next Pastor Chats that the Lord, and His Holy Spirit, through His Word will help you confirm your salvation and give you the full assurance of it and the joy that comes with it.
