Romans 5:9
We have been talking about justification by faith which results in eternal and endless blessings! We have peace, access, hope, patience in sufferings, and the love of God being poured into our hearts and lives by the Holy Spirit. (Romans 5:1-5)
Now the Apostle Paul tells us about something that is “much more” than even these. It’s like he saves the best for the last! “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.” (Romans 5:9)
Because God is a holy, righteous and just God, He must punish sin! At the heart of justification is the fact that Jesus, through His death and blood, made propitiation for our sins. Which means that instead of me experiencing the punishment for my sin, Jesus took my place on the cross, and as my substitute, the full wrath of God was poured out on Him as He suffered and died.
What good is it if I presently have peace, access, hope, patience and love but I’m still under the condemnation of my sin and one day will face eternal punishment? God’s future wrath is twofold in scripture. If I die in my sins, rejecting God’s free gift of salvation, one day I will experience the “second death.” This is eternal separation from God in a terrible place called the “Lake of Fire” which was prepared for the devil and his angels. There is also a “wrath to come” which is a time period we read about in 1 & 2 Thessalonians, the Book of Revelation and other scriptures, that is called “The Seven Year Tribulation.” This is a future time when God will pour out His wrath on the earth.
Thank God, if we have been justified by His blood, we never have to experience this wrath of God! Today, would be a great day for all of us to make sure that we have truly experience God’s wonderful love and forgiveness provided for us through the gift of His Son, Jesus! God bless!
